Report of the working group on the distribution and status of East African mammals - Phase 1: Large Mammals
1977  Full Book

The agreed objectives of the project were delineated as follows at an early meeting of the working group: To provide for the East African Wild Life Society an up-to-date statement on the following: I. A list of mammal species occurring in East Africa. II. The present distribution of each species, i.e. all areas and habitats in which each is reported to occur since 1965. III. Indications as to wether the distribution is expanding or declining. IV. An indication of relative abundance (status) by means of a series of categories. V.Population densities for all major populations (and hence the total population estimate for East Africa). VI. In association with the Habitat Working Group, a characterization of each major habitat that contains mammals and an indication of the essential importance of each character (food, water, shelter, etc.) to the mammalian species contained. The project was viewed as an on-going exercise progressively producing and updating the above information and any accompanying recommendations on such matters as research needed and protective measures.
