Movement patterns and feeding behavior of the leopard in the Rhodes Matopos National Park, Rhodesia | |
1978 (unknown): 58-69 | |
The present study investigated movement patterns and feeding behavior of leopard (_Panthera pardus_) in the Rhodes Matopos National Park, Rhodesia, relying heavily upon the interpretation of signs and the analysis of leopard scats augmented by other data. It was concluded that leopards are generally solitary animals with the majority being resident in home ranges averaging 18 km2 occupied by a male and one or two females. Other individuals were less restricted in their movements. Scats yielded remains from 19 and 12 species of mammals from the two adjacent study areas respectively, and confirmed the reported predominance of Procaviidae in the food of leopard in this area. The method of killing and the habit of dragging larger prey carcasses to cover is described. |
