2007 Cat News (46): 17-18 | |
The population of Asiatic Wildcat _Felis silvestris ornata_, known as Desert Cat in India, is under severe threat for various reasons. Interbreeding with the domestic cat is the main cause, along with habitat destruction and poaching for the illegal pelt trade. In the past, this cat was known to occur at various places in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan and Gujarat in India.Since 1999, efforts were made to confirm the sighting at various places in Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Nagaur districts of Rajasthan. A detailed survey was started as the "Conservation of the Asiatic Wildcat-Project", with the support of local communities and volunteers in Jan. 2004 in Nagaur and Jodhpur districts. |
