Footprints of Machairodontid felids form the late Tertiary of central Mexico
2007 Conference Proceeding
The footprints attributed to Felidae are the main topic of this work, these show morphological features that relate them, positivelly, with a particular subfamily of cats, the Machairodontinae. The fossil record of footprints attributed to Felidae is scarce; the oldest feloid footprints are known from the Miocene site of Salinas de A¤ana, Spain; this record becomes little diverse in some Late Tertiary to Quaternary sites, where the footprints of small to large felids have been recorded; this record include footprints that represent small to large felids, such as those known as Felipeda and/or Pumaeichnium, footprints of an extinct subspecies of jaguar (_Panthera onca augusta_) and those of Panthera atrox, the extinct North American prehistoric lion |
