Bushmeat: Some Experiences from Tanzania
2002  Full Book

History of bushmeat experiences in Tanzania. The first concerns about the effects of bushmeant hunting and trade dates back to around 1900 when the country was under German rule. After Great Britain had taken over the colony in 1918, it introduced more restrictive laws concerning bushmeat hunting that followed rules similar to European sport hunting. Despite being illegal now for the past sixty or seventy years, the bushmeat trade has continue to thrive and possibly expands. Reasons for this are named. One has to look for new ways now. To fight and ban the consumption of wildlife meat and encourage the production of meat from domestic animal is more than a questionable strategy. If the use of wildlife, including the consumption of venison, can help to conserve wildlife, we should encourage this instead of banning it. An introduction to the Selous Conservation Programme is given.
