European Studbook for the Jaguarundi (_Herpailurus yaguarondi_)
2007  Full Book

This studbook contains a lot of data and may be the most intensive work about this species to date. In addition to the presentation of the species, it contains the details of any dead or alive jaguarundi for Europe, and is current through 31 December 2006. In the EAZA Felid Regional Collection Plan, the jaguarondi was not recommended for EEP, nor ESB management. EAZA institutions were consequently encouraged to stop holding them in favour of other small felids. However, despite its non-threatened status and the RCP recommendations, jaguarondis are still held in European institutions and the number of inbred animals is increasing with the number of specimens. In the upcoming new Regional Collection Plan, this species will be recommended to be phased out again. Stopping breeding them at all may be a utopia since many parks still want to hold some. Therefore, a real management is urgently needed to prevent having too many animals and most of all, avoiding inbreeding.
