New Records of the Andean cat (_Leopardus jacobita_) in Neuqu‚n Province, Patagonia, Argentinia | |
2008 Full Book | |
We briefly report the first records of the Andean cat (_Leopardus jacobita_) south of the R¡o Colorado, in the Patagonian region of Argentina in Neuqu‚n province. These records extend the known distribution of the species another 150 km south from the records we reported from southern Mendoza province (Agua de Perez) in May, 2008, and 1000 km south from San Guillermo National Park, which was the southernmost record until two Andean cats were opportunistically photographed in Caverna de las Brujas, southern Mendoza, in 2004. The new findings indicate that this endangered species is found all along the length of the Payunia-Auca Mahuida Guanaco Corridor, which is being created by the provinces of Neuqu‚n and Mendoza to protect the migratory movements of the largest population of guanacos in northern Patagonia. The Neuqu‚n records are also the lowest in elevation ever reported for this species, previously known only from altitudes greater than 3500 m.a.s.l., but recently found in Mendoza as low as 1500 m.a.s.l. |
