Observations on predators and prey at Eravikulam National Park, Kerala
1986 Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society (83): 283-305
Antipredator strategies of Nilgiri tahr (_Hemitragus hylocrius_), sambar (_Cervus unicolor_), gaur (_Bos gaurus_), and Nilgiri langur (_Presbytis johni_) are described. Habitat use, hunting and killing methods, and prey selection are presented for tiger (_Panthera tigris_), leopard (_P. pardus_), Asiatic wild dog (_Cuon alpinus_), jackal (_Canis aureus_), and humans. Observations and evidence from droppings indicated that tiger, leopard, and wild dog all preyed most frequently on sambar. Leopard and wild dog also preyed on Nilgiri tahr. Observations from Eravikulam National Park are used as a basis for the discussion of some general concepts of antipredator behavior. |
