The extirpation of Bali and Javan tiger: Lessons from the past

Many small tiger populations are completely isolated, critically endangered and facing a bleak future. Entire subspecies from Bali, Java and areas in or around the Caspian Sea have not survived and have perished from the wild (Jackson & Kemf, 1999). This paper focuses on identifying the critical factors, both from ecological and socio-economical points of view, which led to the extirpation of Bali tiger (_Panthera tigris balica_) and Javan tiger (_Panthera tigris sondaica_) in the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java, and to utilize this knowledge to help conserve the Bengal tiger subspecies in Sundarbans mangrove forest in Bangladesh.
