Current distribution of the wildcat Felis silvestris silvestris Schreber, 1775 in northeastern Italy (Mammalia: Felidae)
2006  Bollettino del Museo civico di storia naturale di Venezia (57): 221-239

Present distribution of the wild cat Felis silvestris silvestris Schreber, 1775 in north-eastern Italy (_Mammalia: Felidae_). The Author makes a short synthesis of the data on the distribution of the wild cat in northeastern Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto regions), and adds also a few considerations on the local evolution of its populations. The species shows clear trends to the expansion, with very considerable populations particularly on the Julian Pre-Alps. On the contrary, in the karstic areas near Trieste and Gorizia, the populations seem to be more rarefied, but they can however be considered in good conditions. The wild cat shows clear trends to the expansion both to the North (Carnia and Tarvisiano), and to the South (high and low Friulian plain), and this phenomenon seems to have started in the 1970s. The present situation seems to be related on one hand (1) to the recent re-grown of the wood on the Alpine Arch and on the Karst, on the other hand (2) to the legal protection of the species, firstly guaranteed by Italian National Law 968/1977, then confirmed by Italian National Law 157/1992. On the basis of the existing data in north-eastern Italy it is possible to estimate the presence of more or less 300 (148-296) wild cats.
