1999 Full Book | |
First, we describe the distribution of the wildcat in Switzerland, and compare this with the results of earlier research. This investigation shows that the current distribution of the wildcat is localised in the Jura mountain chain, and the adjacent areas. Secondly, we present the results of our radio-tracking study, carried out from 1994 to 1997, following five wildcats (2 females and 3 males) established in a mountainous habitat (Jura), and also another individual (1 male) living in an agricultural zone at the foot of the Jura mountains. The subjects covered are mainly the description of home range and social organisation, periods of activity and movements, habitat utilisation and the characteristics of resting areas, diet, and finally certain aspects concerning reproduction and the relations between wildcats and domestic cats. In addition, particular attention is paid to an abiotic factor confronting the five individuals in the first zone studied: the amount and duration of snow cover. |
