Lions, livestock and spears
2007  Africa Geographic: 61-66

Ranging far beyond the borders of formal protected areas, the lions of Masailand in southern Kenya eke out a precarious existence. Tempted by the easy pickings of Maasai livestock, they are vulnerable to retribution and are being killed at an unsustain able rate. In March 2004, wildlife biologists Seamus Maclennan and Laurence Frank created the Kilimanjaro Lion Conservation Project, an initiative that is finding ways to broker a peace between Africa's largest freeranging lion population - and the Maasai who regard it as an expensive nuisance.
