Tigers in India: A Critical Review of Field Censuses
  Tigers of the World: 119-132

Based on current knowledge of the ecology and ecology of the ecology and behavior of tigers and other large carnivores, this analysis evaluates the India tiger census data / methods and tries to answer the following questions: 1) Are the numbers of the tiger and its large co-predators (leopard, Panthera pardus and dhole, Cuon alpinus) as reported in the census figures, sustainable on the basis of the published data on populations of their major prey species? 2 ) Are the numbers of tigers reported from diverse habitats consistent with the recent findings about the ecology and social organization of the tiger? 3 ) Are the reported increase of wild tiger populations in consonance with oberservations of population dynamics of tigers at other localities? 4 ) What are the weaknesses of the present method of monitoring tiger populations, and what improvements can be made in them?
