White Tigers and Their Conservation
1987  Book Chapter

All the white tigers found at the zoos of Calcutta, and Delhi in India, Washington, DC in the USA and Bristol in England originated from two founder animals, namely Mohan, a white male and Begum, a orange female. Since these two animals were caught in the forests of Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, all their descendants belong to the Rewa lineage. During the last two decades the white tigers of this lineage suffered significant losses, probably due to their high coefficients of inbreeding which lead to reduced fertility and to increased neonatal mortality. Other consequences of inbreeding are mentioned as well as possible solutions to counteract it.
