Review of diseases in Snow leopards (_Uncia uncia_)
2009  Conference Proceeding

This paper reviews the major diseases which have been reported in snow leopards, primarily captive snow leopards. Viral pathogens important in unvaccinated captive individuals include feline infectious enteritis and feline rhinotracheitis virus. Bacterial pathogens have included Mycobacterium bovis and Bacillus piliformis as well as common bacteria such as Eschericia coli and Salmonella spp. and unusual pathogens such as Klebsiella oxytoca. Haemobartonella felis was diagnosed as a fatal infection in cubs. In addition to ringworm and candidiasis, several unusual fungal infections have been identified in captive snow leopards. Gastrointestinal nematodes are common; other parasitic infections include mites and toxoplasmosis. Toxic disease is rare, but traumatic injuries are more common and sometimes fatal. Other important diseases include both papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas associated with papilloma virus, chronic renal disease, chronic liver disease (veno-occlusive with associated fibrosis), hip dysplasia, ocular coloboma, and neurodegenerative conditions in neonates and juveniles.
