Action plan protection of the wildcat in Austria

The wildcat is consideret extinct in Austria in the 1950s. Nowadays, single observations are available from national park Thayatal, Styria and southern Karinthia. However, the status in unclear. This action plan provides the basis for the conservation of the wildcat in Austria. The current knowledge is presented as well as the procedure to make the wildcat to be present again. The first part describes the biology and ecology of the species. The status, distribution and threats of the wildcat in the neighbouring countries is presented: Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Slovakia. Dispersal of individuals are primarily to be expected from Germany, Slovenia or Slovakia. Information on legal status, threats and a habitat model for wildcats in Austria are provided. Concrete aims and measures for the establishment of a viable wildcat population are described.
