Ecotourism Trends

A survey of 228 ecotour operators offering tours to the Asia Pacific region was conducted in 1995 and 1996. Seventeen of the companies were no longer in business, resulting in a total of 211 being surveyed. Of these, 44 respondents (21%) returned the surveys. Half of these were based in the Asia Pacific region and half in North America. A complete analysis of the survey results appear elsewhere (Lew 1998). The survey contained three questions that addressed trends in the Asia Pacific ecotourism industry. The first asked how the industry has changed over the period from about 1993 to 1996 (Table 1). The second addressed projected trends over the coming two years (Table 2), while the third asked respondents to indicate barriers to the future development of ecotourism (Table 3)
