Arazpa Tiger Campaign
2003  Full Book

ARAZPA and its member zoos and aquariums have already proven to be strong supporters of tiger conservation. The ARAZPA Wildlife Conservation Fund was established two years ago to help conserve animals in the wild, and to date most efforts have been focused upon Sumatran tigers. We now aim to further strengthen this commitment. ARAZPA joins EAZA (European Zoo & Aquaria Association) and FZGGBI (British Zoo Association) in a global tiger campaign to help ensure the survival of tigers in the wild. The ARAZPA Wildlife Conservation Fund on behalf of its member zoos and aquariums has already forwarded some $38,000 to 21st Century Tiger projects in Sumatra, Indonesia. Special thanks is extended to Perth Zoological Gardens, Dreamworld and Adelaide Zoo whose very generous contributions to tiger conservation have already made them eligible for gold, silver and bronze tiger campaign certificates respectively. 21st Century Tiger is a unique partnership between the Zoological Society of London and Global Tiger Patrol, which has been raising funds for wild tiger conservation since 1997 and receives continuing support from the UK government. Many of you will have already seen the fabulous work 21st Century Tiger is doing through the lecture tour conducted by Sarah Christie in January 2002. Currently there are nine 21st Century Tiger conservation projects operating concurrently in Sumatra, South East Asia, Far East Russia and India. The ARAZPA Tiger Campaign will continue to concentrate on raising funds to support projects in Sumatra. More specifically, funds will be used to support research in Jambi, to investigate the ranging patterns of Sumatran tigers to help understand how a small population of tigers survive in a commercial landscape. The long-term of goal is to identify mechanisms which are important to the persistence of Sumatran tigers in the wild and coexistence with humans. Tigers face many different threats - loss of habitat, loss of prey, being hunted for their skins and for traditional medicine ingredients, conflict with humans for living space, to name a few. However, the news is not all ominous, with your support the ARAZPA Tiger Campaign will help secure a more promising future for the tiger. And along the way people will learn how zoos contribute to conservation of tigers in the wild and how they themselves can help. Zoos are increasingly being encouraged to demonstrate how they support conservation in the wild and a campaign like this certainly offers a solution. Not only are tigers on the IUCN Critical or Endangered list, they are also extremely popular and virtually guarantee media coverage. This campaign package has been distributed to all ARAZPA members holding tigers, and I would like to urge members to participate enthusiastically in this campaign either through raising awareness of the threats tigers face in the wild and/or through raising funds for conservation efforts in Sumatra, Indonesia.
