Business Collaboration on Amur Tiger Conservation. Final Programmatic Report | |
2005 Full Book | |
For centuries tigers were our neighbors. They have been the object of our admiration, amazement, fear and respect. Logging, habitat destruction, intensive collection of non-timber forest products and hunting have led to serious decline in the animals that tigers rely on for food. Three of eight tiger subspecies are extinct, while the five that survive have been reduced. Currently the number of the Amur tiger according to the last monitoring is estimated in 52 tigers and 19 cubs, so the total number is 71 individuals. In the frame of the project the key staff attempted to halt tiger destruction and increase the level of ecological responsibility of the hunting businessmen and its interaction with governing bodies. To put into practice the objectives of the project the Wildlife Foundation has created GIS and the map included hunting collectives and a geographical distribution of tigers. The map was distributed among governmental officials, hunting collectives and all interested parties. The map will help to increase tigers' feeding resources and protect tiger habitats. There was conducted the workshop for hunting users and businessmen. The workshop helped to attract attention not only the businessmen but a large number of specialists of different environmental protection establishments and officials of krai Government to the problem of tiger conservation and its habitat. Sociological surveys conducted among hunting users, businessmen, rangers and forest specialists helped to reveal the professional skills of key staff of hunting collectives in the field of hunting business development on ecologically responsible basis and also their attitude to the issues of the Amur tiger conservation and its habitat. The results of surveys show that there is no time left for tigers and no more time for humans who value their existence. The work with 12 businessmen should be continued. Tigers must be saved now. To save tigers people must know problems they face. People should change their behavior, activities and attitude to them. For this purpose there were developed and published 3 kinds of leaflets (1500 copies) and 2 kinds of brochures (1000 copies) which were disseminated among the audience of the project. There was organized a wide discussion of the program on improvement of professional skills of the representatives of hunting business. The program (500 copies) was supposed to integrate in the learning process of the State Vocational Education Center "Khabarovsky Krai Professional Development Institute". It will help to educate at least 50 leaders of the hunting collectives during the year. 3 "round tables" conducted during the fulfillment of the project helped to establish close contacts with 45 businessmen, forest specialist, rangers and journalists. In future they will be our assistants and friends. Large work was done with the journalists. There were given three interviews to the regional radio by the issues of the Amur tiger conservation, conducted the discussion of the results of seminar work by radio and organized a press conference for journalists by the issues of tiger monitoring. Local TV companies and newspapers widely covered that press conference. There were written some articles in the local newspapers about the Amur tiger and its habitat conservation. It is possible to assume that only in partnership and collaboration will be possible to increase tiger population in the nearest future in the Russian Far East. |
