Business for Tiger Conservation II (2005-0013-008)
2006  Full Book

In the frame of the project the key staff attempted to halt tiger destruction and increase the level of environmental responsibility of timber industry businessmen and forest users. To put into practice the objectives of the project such activity as the workshop for forest users was conducted. It helped to attract attention not only the businessmen but a large number of specialists of different environmental protection establishments and officials of the regional Government to the problem of tiger conservation and its habitat. Sociological survey conducted among the forest users helped to reveal their attitude to the issues of the Amur Tiger conservation and its habitat. The results of survey show that there is no time left for tigers and no time for humans who value their existence. The work with timber industry companies should be continued. Tigers must be saved now. To save tigers people must know problems they face. People should change their behavior and attitude to tigers. For this purpose there were developed and published 2 kinds of brochures, a color poster with tiger image and the brochure by the results of the seminar. Three "round tables" conducted during the fulfillment of the project helped to established close contacts with 91 businessmen, forest managers, rangers, journalists and etc. The project executors consider that in future they will be the assistants and friends of the Wildlife Foundation in tiger conservation movement. A great work was done on inventory of timber industry companies working in tiger habitat. The Wildlife Foundation has investigated 111 plots of forest fund. As it turned out 47 timber companies are working in the area of the Amur Tiger habitat. The results of inventory were discussed with the representatives of timber industry businessmen, hunting users, forest managers and the regional Working Group on Biodiversity Conservation. The results of inventory were used in the production of GIS and the map. The map with timber industry companies working in tiger habitat will help the businessmen to use forest resources more rational not destroying the tiger's area. The Wildlife Foundation has constantly worked with mass media. There were given five interviews by the chairman of the Wildlife Foundation to the regional radio and local newspaper by the issues of the Amur Tiger conservation. There were shown three video films about the Amur Tiger by regional TVs. Mass media helped to involve in the process of tiger conservation approximately 500,000 people. It is possible to assume that only in partnership and collaboration will be possible to increase tiger population in the nearest future in the Russian Far East.
