Carnivore re-introductions: Applying science to management | |
Full Book | |
The paper has been written to highlight and revive the role of science in carnivore reintroductions. The paper encompasses various factors such as the biology of the species, genetic and demographic factors, behavioural aspects, diseases and human carnivore conflicts among others that govern the performance of a reintroduction programme. The role of science has been emphasized in the background of poor success of the most reintroduction programmes and the latest scientific findings in the field of carnivore conservation and biology. The causes of failure of carnivore reintroductions have been dealt with, with explicit explanation of measures to make reintroductions a successful endeavour. A few case studies highlighting the need of better understanding of the biological and technical aspects of carnivore reintroductions have also been discussed. The paper intends to emphasize the role of reintroductions based on sound scientific management as a tool in carnivore conservation and not based on political and social whims and fancies. |
