Molecualr Genetics and Morphological Variation of Lions_ (Panthera leo)_
2005 African Lion News - The newsletter of the AFRICAN lion working group (6): 3-7
Studies in molecular genetics offer important new vistas to understanding the evolutionary history, gene flow, and the current population structure of the lion (_Panthera leo_). Coupled with morphological studies, they offer a powerful means of identifying evolutionarily significant units (ESU) or lineages within the species that ought to be targets for both wildlife management and conservation. We first summarize the current situation concerning understanding of the molecular genetics and morphological variation of the lion. Then, we try to suggest future directions for understanding the naturally occurring variation in the lion. |
