Hunter outreach and education in Russian Far Est
2002  Full Book

We carried out our project, _HUNTER OUTREACH AND EDUCATION IN RUSSIAN FAR EAST _with several specific goals in mind. The most important of these goals is to prevent an erosion of an improved public awareness for the need to resolve tiger-human conflicts in a peaceful manner. As Russia enters the second decade of its effort to substitute a market economy for its former planned economy, the economic reality of the Russian Far East remains difficult for those living in rural forest villages. Natural resources, including wildlife resources, suffer from poor management, corruption and government ambivalence to the fate of rural communities that rely upon these resources. This is combined with an aggressive effort to open up these resources to unsustainable, and at times, barbaric exploitation. Relying on official statistics and government statements alone, one would get the impression that the problems faced by people in the taiga are theirs alone. It is a dangerous tendency when government purports to know what is going on in the forest when it really doesn't.
