The current distribution of the wildcat (_Felis silvestris silvestris_ Schreber, 1777) in Switzerland
2010  Full Book

Current distribution of the wildcat in Switzerland - Results of the systematic surveys in the Jura Mts. in winter 2008/09 and 2009/10: Data was gathered by means of hair-traps (battens impegrated with valeriana lure). The hairs were analyzed genetically. 139 kilometre squares with 3 traps each were surveyed. Results: the occurrence of wildcats in the Swiss Jura Mts covers an area of 614 km2, which is 10% of the Jura compartment. The two factors "proportion of forest in the square" and "distance to origin of recolonization into Switzerland" explain best the current distribution. The authors estimate the population size to be 159-930 wildcats.
