We have carefully considered the responses to our paper contributed by Bums & Connolly, Ellins, Lehner & Horn and Wade, and have tried as far as is possible to address the remarks in each of their commentaries. However. we are of the opinion that a number of their points had already been treated adequately in the original paper, and so did not require further discussion. Rather than providing a single response to similar statements from more than one author, we have considered each commentary separately. We are grateful to the Editor of Appetite for having provided a forum for the presentation of our different points of view on this subject.
