The phenomenon of sacralization in the Pleistocene sabre-tooth
2011 American Journal of Surgery (10 ): 587-589
The anomalous phenomenon of the exaggerated development of the transverse processes of the last lumbar vertebra until they look like part of the sacrum is known in medical literature as sacralization. That this may be accompanied by co-ossification with the sacrum is obvious. The relation of this condition, often seen in roentgenological examinations of the lumbosacral region, to lumbosacral pain has attracted some attention among medical men. The anomaly creates disturbances in the lumbosacral passages of nerves and blood vessels, which may cause pain. |
