Die L”win von Rockenberg (Wetterau, Hessen) im Kontext von 200 Jahren Forschung am H”hlenl”wen, Panthera leo spelaea (Goldfuss, 1810) | |

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the first description and naming of the cave lion, _Panthera leo spelaea _(GOLDFUá, 1810), a survey of the research history of this large pantherine cat is given. A new find of a mandibular fragment from Late Pleistocene sediments of Rockenberg (Wetterau, Hesse, Germany) is described and shown to originate from a very small cave lioness, near the lower limit of the size range. As the species identification at first seemed to be questionable in view of the very small size of the fossil, diagnostic differences between the mandibular teeth of _Panthera leo spelaea _and the Eurasian jaguar, _Panthera onca gombaszoegensis _(KRETZOI, 1938), are presented. |
