Escherichia coli septicemia in a Felis chaus (Jungle cat)
2006 Conference Proceeding
A male jungle cat (Felis chaus) belong to Tehran Zoo with a history of lethargy, anorexia, weakness and lateral recumbency was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary, University of Tehran. Physical examination revealed that respiration and heart rates were increased and hyperemic mucous with dehydration of animal were diagnosed. Treatment consisted of a fluid therapy and anabolic steroids to improve and stabilize animal condition. The cat's condition deteriorated and died a few hours after the treatment. After death the animal immediately was necropsied. Abnormalities noted in the CBC included thrombocytopenia, leukopenia with a left shift and ring-nucleated neutrophils, toxic neutrophils. Blood Smear evaluation revealed rod-shape bacteria in frequently whitin the cytoplasm of neutrophils. The main post mortem findings were sever hemorrhagic and erosive gastritis, alveolar atelectasia, hyperemia and congestion of visceral organs. The stomach of animal macroscopically demonstrated typical extended erosion and hemorrhage on the surface. Bacterial culture yielded Escherichia coli from cardiac blood bone marrow and liver samples that collected. Clinical signs and leukograms provide supportive evidence for bactermia, and the diagnosis were confirmed by bacterial culture. This finding indicative for E. coli septicemia in this case. |
