Evaluation of four years experience with medetomidine-ketamine anaesthesia in zoo animals
1996  Conference Proceeding

This paper describes the immobilisation of 218 mammals, belonging to 48 species using a combination of medetomidine and ketamine-HCl. Atipamezole and RX821002a were used as reversal agents. The anaesthetic drug combination proved to be safe in all cases. In most species a dose range of 60-100 8g/kg BW of medetomidine combined with ketamine produced anaesthetic rates ranging from mild sedation to surgical anaesthesia. However, in 2 suidae species an average dose of 130-150 8g/kg BW of medetomidine was needed to produce light anaesthesia. The dose of ketamine in non-hoofstock and bushpigs ranged from 3-6 mg/kg BW. Generally in hoofstock a dose range of 1-3 mg/kg BW ketamine was sufficient.
