Lens anomalies and other ophthalmic findings in a group of closely related Angola lions _(Panthera leo bleyenberghi)_
2005 Verhandlungsbericht des.Internationalen Symposiums ber die Erkrankungen der Zoo- und Wildtiere (42): 153-161
Five adult lions, ranging in the age from 1.5 to 5.5 years, and five lion cubs were studied clinically. Eyes of three lion cubs underwent histopathological examination. The most significant findings were cataracts of various stages, which were observed in four adult lions and one male cub. Severe lenticular abnormalities, including microphakia and aphakia, were noted in the histopathological examination of the cub's eyes. Additional ophthalmic findings, of lesser clinical consequence, were also noted. We suspect that inheritance contributed to most of the lenticular disorders we noted. Therefore the animals in this group should undergo periodic ophthalmologic examinations and future breeding with the present parent-lions will be prevented. |
