Persistent hypercalcaemia and response of thyroid c-cells in wild felids kept in zoos
2000 Conference Proceeding
Persistent hypercalcaemia has different causes and can result in heterotopic tissue calcification. This calcinosis frequently occurs in zoo-kept felids, especially in lynxes. Immunohistochemical examination of thyroid samples of cases with calcinosis showed a hyperplasia of C-cells as a response to hypercalcaemia. Supplements of calcium and vitamin D should be handled with care in zoo-kept felids and lynxes in particular. |
