European Regional Studbook for the Asiatic Caracal

The living population as recorded in the studbook consists of 14.11.0 (25) Asiatic caracals. Historically there are 41.41.7 (90) Asiatic caracals recorded in the International Studbook. Of the current living population, 15 animals are wild caught of which only eight are represented. There are seven potential founders that could be included in the population, although of these six are older than 10 years of age and are no longer likely to breed. There are four animals of unknown origin that have been classified as _Caracal caracal schmitzi _in the International Studbook. The current gene diversity in this population is 88.65%. The potential gene diversity is 96.5% if all seven potential founders contribute to the breeding program.
