A Basic Manual on Wild Animal Capture and Immobilisation
2010  Full Book

Wild animals are generally captured for food, sport, research, and management. This manual provides basic information on wild animal capture and immobilisation for management purposes. Contents for this manual have been adapted or taken from a number of other documents (see references section), particularly from Lewis and Goodrich (2009) (with author's permission). Information for the section on blow pipes was taken from Kreeger and Arnemo (2007) and TeleDart GmbH & Co.KG (2009). Information on dart preparation and gun operation was reproduced from Palmer Cap-Chur Inc. (2003). Wild animal capture and immobilisation is commonly used for managing many wildlife species from bats to elephants. However, wild animal capture and immobilisation requires specialist training so that the process is as safe and humane as possible. There are a wide range of capture techniques and handling protocols available that are not covered in this manual. This manual focuses on wild tiger capture and immobilisation, but contains information that may be also useful for dealing with other species and is specifically designed for use by Bangladesh Forest Department staff. All capture methods normally have some risk to the animal and the people doing the catching. Also there are always additional risks to the animal and immobilisation team when using drugs to anaesthetise or sedate an animal. Modern anaesthetic drugs generally have a wide safety margin, but none are absolutely safe and the reaction of any individual animal to anaesthesia is not totally predictable. All sections of this manual, including the appendices, must be studied before any animal capture/immobilisation is carried out. It is also important to note that the information in this manual is basic, and it is strongly advised that FD staff do not use this manual for animal capture or immobilisation without practical training and experience in the methods to be used. Also, it is strongly advised that immobilisation of wild animals by FD staff is done under direction of a qualified vet.
