Radio-telemetry study of tigers in Kanha Tiger Reserve, India
2010  Series

Ten tigers were radio-collared for this study. These included 3 adult females, 1 sub-adult female, 2 adult males, and 4 sub-adult males. The tigers were tracked using elephants early in the morning and tranquilized with suitable drugs (meditomedine + ketamine) administered intra-muscularly using a tele-inject dart gun. the use of meditomedine in combination with ketamine (Jalanka and Roeken, 1990; Kreeger, 1996) improves the margin of safety and provides versatility in anaesthetising free ranging animals (Jhala et al., 2004). Administration of the antidote, atipamezole, resulted in the total recovery of anaestetised tigers within 10 minutes. The radio-collars (Telonics and Habit Research) weighed less than 1% of the body weight of the tigers.
