A study of clouded leopards in captivity | |
2012 Full Book | |
In captive environments, do clouded leopards spend more time performing hiding behaviors (i.e. not able to be seen, trying not to be seen, sleeping under cover) than performing overt behaviors (i.e. interacting, eating, sleeping in an easily viewable area)? Over the month of July in 2012, multiple observations were made on the behavior of the clouded leopard female in captivity at Brookfield Zoo ("Sky"). These observations were made at different times of the day, taking into consideration Sky's feeding times. The male clouded leopard housed at Brookfield Zoo ("Dongwa") is kept off of display during the day due to his sensitivity to crowds and was therefore unfortunately unable to be observed and monitored. The results of our observations showed that Sky spends a significantly greater amount of time performing overt behaviors than she does performing hiding behaviors. However, many other factors may have played a role in producing these unusual results. |
