Rieger, I.
Oestrous timing in ounces, _Uncia uncia_, Schreber (1775)
1984  Book Chapter

The main focus of the present paper is to add some more information to the actual knowledge of ounces reproduction in zoological gardens. Time and duration of oestrous will be discussed and a few aspects of particular interest will be mentioned. In the scientific literature, one finds more or less two diametric interpretations of the ounce social organization, one saying that this species, the other does not exclude the possibility that ounces form family groups. This dichotomy is also reflected in the divergent management conditions for ounces in zoological gardens. Thus one can find zoos that keep their ounces solitarly, others in pairs and a few zoos keep ounces in small groups.
