Project of an ounce breeding centre at Darjeeling zoo | |
1984 Book Chapter | |
Practically nothing is known about free living ounces in India. This lack of knowledge is not astonishing, because information concerning range and number of this cat species in India is not available. The same is true for other parts of the range of ounces. The main reason for this knowledge vacuum is the severe ecological conditions which hinder continuous observations. Until now, in India, no one ever kept ounces in breeding groups although several ounce individuals were kept as pet animals for varying periods of time. The project of a breeding centre at Darjeeling Zoo is the first in this respect. Most wild caught ounces in zoological gardens originate not from peninsular India, but from Siberia. |
