Different subspecies of lions (_Panthera leo_) in zoos and in East African reserves show a ridge. In Kenya and Tanzania 35% of males and 50% of females and young ones have a ridge (n=93). Contrary to the Rhodesian Ridgeback two newborn Indian lions (_Panthera leo persica_) in Zoo Frankfurt did not show a ridge. The ridges developed at an age of approximately two months. |
