Sleeping Sickness Survey in the Serengeti Area (Tanzania) 1971

During November 1971, 95 mammals were examined by various methods for the presence of trypanosomes. All animals investigated inside the park, namely 31 spotted hyaenas, 43 lions, 1 waterbuck and 9 hartebeest, were immobilized with tranquilizers. A further 11 hartebeest were shot just outside the park. Forty strains of _T. brucei _subgroup were isolated in rats and preserved in liquid nitrogen. All strains wer subsequently tested with the BIIT, where 4 strains gave a_ T. rhodesiense_-like reaction.
