The logic of behavioural ecology can provide useful insights in conservation. We demonstrate here that an optimal foraging model that describes the spatial distribution of the economic costs and benefits of illegal game meat hunting helps to understand spatial patterns of illegal hunting of the large Serengeti herds in Tanzania.
