Seasonal Distribution of large mammal populations in the unflooded middle Zambezi Valley
1972 Journal of Applied Ecology (9): 283-299
The flooding of the Middle Zambezi Valley above the Kariba dam compelled the large mammals to forsake part of the range they had formerly occupied. The flooded area had contained a variety of vegetation types, largely riverine, which were not represented above the final lake level. Hence mammals which had been living in the area of the present Lake Kariba suffered a diminution, not only in area of country, but also in range of habitat types available to them. During a study of the effects of the flooding upon the mammals living around Lake Kariba, it became necessary to understand the mammals of the Mana Pools Game Reserve in the unflooded Zambezi Valley below Kariba gorge were studied. Their patterns of seasonal utilization of the riverine habitats were recorded and are described in this paper. |
