Effect on wildlife of a water-hole in Mikumi National Park, Tanzania
1990 African Journal of Ecology (28): 147-151
During the dry season wild ungulates in tropical African savannas need to drink more frequently in order to meet their body water requirements, which, in the wet season, are partly obtained from the green forage. Over larger areas of a number of nature reserves natural water-holes dry up during the dry season and animals are forced to move to regions with open water. In very dry years even the more permanent water-holes and streams dry out resulting in the deaths of large numbers of animals. In recent years artificial water-holes have been created in a number of nature reserves to alleviate the problem of water shortage. |
