In reply to Pierce and Ollason's critique of optimization techniques in general and foraging theory in particular, we discuss the logic and use of optimality approaches. Most of their argument is based on a misinterpretation of the underlying logic of optimization theory and more, generally, of basic tenets of the scientific method. We agree with some points - not new ones - towards the end of their list - in particular with certain problems encountered when analyzing foraging behaviour. |
