This book came about by chance, and had its origin in a remark made by my wife, Sanjna, in my basement library. Although my collection has hundreds of books on India and its fauna that I have acquired over the decades, Sanjna was quite right when she accused me of 'never reading a thing'. Her comment spurred me into action, and I decided I would start reading through all the books I possessed in order to put together an anthology of 500 years of writing on the tiger. That book, called Tiger Fire, which seeks to be the definitive anthology of tiger writing, will be published later this year. But in the course of pulling it together, I stumbled upon some facts and an idea took root in my mind. |
