The wildcat (_Felis silvestris_) in Austria - IV. When is a relase of the wildcat in Austria useful? (Die Wildkatze (_Felis silvestris_) in Oesterreich - IV. Wann ist eine Freilassung der Wildkatze in Oesterreich sinnvoll?) | |

According to the Red Data Book the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) is rated as "extinct, exterminated or missed" in Austria (Spitzenberger 2005). Recent observations show that at least some individuals migrate through Austria. To establish a stable wildcat population in Austria an action plan for the conservation of the European wildcat was formulated (Slotta-Bachmayr et al. 2012). In this action plan a possible supplementation of the wildcat population is discussed also. The aim of this project is to prepare the theoretical background for a supplementation and to discuss the main factors influencing the process of decision-making: threats availability of suitable habitats status and size of wild population acceptance by stake holders management of feral cats practical aspects of the release such as: Which animals should be released? Where should the wildcats be released? How are the animals to be trained? evaluation measures accompanying measures Using the factors listed above it should become possible to make a decision about a supplementation of wildcats in Austria. |
