Conservation implications of Kalahari lion population dynamics
2013 African Journal of Ecology (51): 176-179
Conservationists face challenges when small populations are embedded in landscapes used by humans. Such populations suffer demographic risk that may lead to extinction. Retribution killing, hunting and emerging diseases may accentuate risks for carnivores. The lion population in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park is small and isolated with a disease and persecution history. Landscape use in the Kgalagadi Region focuses on conservation, ecotourism and livestock farming. These evolving stressors provide unknown threats to this key lion conservation unit. |
