Gurung, B.
Communities collaborating in tiger monitoring - activities to reduce poaching
2010  Full Book

Poaching is threatening the long-term survival of tigers across the species range including Nepal. Reducing illegal killing requires a broad approach that strengthens enforcement and management units. This project builds the capacities of the buffer zone community forestry user groups, in biodiversity monitoring, thereby reducing the poaching impact inside the park. Ten forest guards (ban heralu) from four buffer zone user committees in Madi Valley, Chitwan National Park, responsible for controlling illegal human activities within their community forests, has been trained in wildlife monitoring activities. Biodiversity monitoring has been integrated into their regular patrolling activities. Initial prey abundance survey results show increasing density of prey pellet groups over the 4 year period. However, one of the three survey block, Reu Khola Block, show no increase in prey pellet groups. Factor contributing to this could be due to fragmentation of vegetation. Informal discussion among ban heralu has been initiated to control the habitat destruction, however, formal discussion with the park staff, community forestry user groups, and ban heralu could be instigated for immediate effect.
