Biodiversity on the Move: Climate Change Impacts to Small Mammals
2012  Conference Proceeding

Climate throughout the world is changing at an unprecedented rate. Change in climate brings unpredictable patterns of weather including temperature, rains, humidity, and change in seasons. Such high rate of unpredictability is difficult to cope with for biota in our natural system. To human knowledge and eye, climate change effects may not be all apparent as it is the subtle change in the environment. Many of our large and well-studied mammals are comparatively more resilient to such effects and appear to be generalists. However it is the small mammals and their greater variety which are usually the first ones to react to minute changes in their environment. Many small mammals in Nepal and elsewhere in the world are found to be specialist occupying extremely narrow niches. Therefore not only the climate change effects will be impacting small mammals more than larger mammals, these small but important mammals, can in fact act as the indicator species for climate change. Research and monitoring such indicator species will give insight on climate change effects, conservation implications for them and to their larger cousins, as well as changes in the overall ecosystems.
