The Iberian lynx: extinction or recovery?
2006  Full Book

The Iberian lynx - a species endemic in Spain and Portugal - is, with about 150 specimens left, on the brink of extinction. The last two reproducing populations living in Spanish Andalusia were diminished by foot shortage due to two succeeding epidemics of rabbit disease, habitat destruction, poaching and road accidents. In 2005, twelve Iberian lynxes were found dead and that is over 7.5% of the entire population! International support should be extended in order to intensify the good measures already taken by the local authorities. In this context, we think of feeding programmes, habitat safeguarding and restoration, staff for inspection, monitoring and guarding, captive breeding, scientific research and publicity. We are convinced that only by joining all national and international forces this beautiful animal may be saved from its imminent fate of extinction.
