Studi Kasus: Kajian Histopatologi pada Seekor Singa Afrika (_Panthera leo_) yang Menderita Pyometra
2012  Full Book

An African lioness (_Panthera leo_) was diagnosed with pyometra after it was found dead with purulent discharge from the vulva. The purpose of this study is to examine gross and histopathological changes of various organs of the lion to know the causes of the death. The organ sample of heart, lungs, liver, intestine, kidney, and uterus were made into histopathology slide with Haematoxilin-Eosin staining. Histopathological examination showed cardiomyopathy, emphysema and edema pulmonum, purulent enteritis, hepatopathy and passive liver congestion, and also chronic active nephritis. Uterus inflammation with purulent exudation indicated pyometra with cycstic endometrial hyperplasia. Pyometra in the lion leads to sepsis that is characterized by hemorrhage and degeneration of parenchymal organs. Cardiomyopathy causes heart failure which leads to congestion of the entire organ. Lion's death was caused by sepsis and heart failure.
